Founded on 9 January 1900 in the Prati district of Rome, Lazio are one of Italy's most famous clubs – winners of two Serie A titles, six Coppa Italias, four Supercoppa Italiana, a UEFA Cup Winners' Cup and a European Super Cup. Throughout their history, Lazio have played in white and sky blue – a homage to Greece, home of the Olympic Games.
In their first twenty years, Lazio became a dominant force in Rome, increasing their fame both at regional and national level and becoming the most important team in the whole Centre-South.
In the 1930s, after the formation of the top division (the current Serie A), Lazio went very close to securing their first trophy, finishing second in the 1936-1937 season. Silvio Piola, one of the greatest Italian strikers of all time, played in that team, scoring 143 goals for Lazio.
Lazio claimed their first trophy in 1958, sealing the Coppa Italia in the final against Fiorentina. The 1970s was a memorable decade for the club, culminating in the victory of the first “biancoceleste” (white and sky blue) championship, thanks to the legendary Maestrelli “crew”, comprising of inspirational players including Chinaglia, Wilson, Oddi and Re Cecconi.
The club enjoyed another golden era under the reign of Sven Göran-Eriksson between 1997 and 2001, winning the Scudetto in the year 2000, two Coppa Italias and a Supercoppa Italiana, the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup and the UEFA Super Cup.
Among the most important victories of the Biancocelesti was their sixth Coppa Italia in 2013, where they beat rivals Roma in the final to take the city bragging rights.
In 2017-2018, the club won their sixth Supercoppa Italiana by beating Juventus and reached the quarter-finals of the UEFA Europa League. In the 2018-2019 season, Lazio lifted their seventh Coppa Italia, the fifteenth trophy in their history, underlining their status as one of the most decorated Italian clubs of the last decade.
