Girona FC was founded almost 90 years ago in the city’s Rambla de la Llibertat, with the club playing in the Segunda División for the first time in 1935–36.
Many of the early years of their history were spent moving between the second and third tiers of Spanish football, and in 1970 the club would move to their current home, the Estadi Montilivi.
The club would enjoy a renaissance in 2008, returning to the second tier of Spanish football for the first time in 49 years, under the management of Raül Agné. The Blanc-i-vermells beat Ceuta 1-0 in the playoffs to mark a new dawn for the club, having won two successive promotions.
After agonisingly missing out on promotion to La Liga following the playoffs in both 2015 and 2016, the club scaled new heights in the 2016–17 season by finishing runners-up in the Segunda División and winning promotion to La Liga for the first time in their 87-year history.
In the 2017–18 season, Girona FC would cap off a highly impressive debut season in the top tier of Spanish football by finishing in 10th place in La Liga, a campaign which included the most famous result in the club’s history - a memorable 2-1 victory over the then reigning European champions Real Madrid. The club played in the Segunda División in the 2019-20 season.
